From Sydney’s Oxford Street in the 80’s, to the City of Oxford in the UK, join Mazz as she leads us on her journey of photographs and stories celebrating our global queer community.  As a teenager, studying at the College of Fine Arts, Mazz began photographing For the gay newspapers, The Village Voice and Sydney Star Observer, had a studio and gallery with a B&W darkroom at Taylor Square and even owned a restaurant a few years later – all this on the bustling Oxford Street, home of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.   At the turn of the century her focus broadened to document international Pride events, starting with WorldPride in Rome.

With a career now spanning many decades she continues to work with the local and international publications, and to present her photographs in exhibitions within public, social and community spaces. Her work has been included in festivals in Montreal, Moscow, Milan, Rome, Berlin, London, San Francisco, Hong Kong and (of course) Sydney.   After attending Oxford Pride in 2006 Mazz joined the organization as a volunteer, was then elected as the first female chair and founded the first Pride Parade in the historic university city. In 2016 the UK Pride Organisers Network was formed. Mazz was elected to the founding board and was re-elected to become the first female-identified co-chair. She is also a member of various committees of InterPride and continues to share her experience and knowledge with new developing Pride organisations.   At the core of this journey from community photographer to international Pride advocate is a passionate dedication to building communities and providing spaces for people to come together and support each other, share skills and celebrate life.  Mazz Image is a multi award-winning photographer who has a life-long love affair with the colour purple and lives in Oxford, UK, with her wife, Debbie, teenager, Oliver and their seven cats.

For Mardi Gras 2024, Mazz is curating an exhibition of community photographers in the Oxford Village as part of the Colours of our Community project in association with Black Dog Institute to help raising awareness of good Mental Health. Look out for the float during the Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday 2 March.
