John Martin—
Concert, radio and recording artist John Martin occupies a near-unique position in Australian music, being a pianist with great experience across a range that reaches from Classical to Music Theatre, light Jazz and Ragtime, Folk and Pop. He is featured on some 18 commercial recordings as well as many in-house recordings for ABC Classic FM. Recordings soon to be released include a collection of Australian compositions with violinist Vov Dylan for Elkwood/Sony to be distributed in some 21 countries, a collection of Australian piano works for Move Records, and and a collection of the piano works of Ann Carr-Boyd for Wirripang.
Future projects include recordings devoted to his own compositions, over fifty of these having been published thus far by Wirripang.
John is as at home partnering singers in Schubert song and instrumentalists in duo sonatas as he is in singing and playing the patter songs of Noel Coward, reciting poetry or delivering a humorous anecdote.
John has worked with a very long list of musical and theatrical luminaries and is rated one of Australia’s finest accompanists. He has enjoyed extensive performing partnerships with clarinetist Deborah de Graaff, cellist Susan Blake, flautists Jane Rutter and Christine Draeger, tenor Andrew Goodwin, baritone Jose Carbo, bass Teddy Tahu Rhodes, sopranos Amelia Farrugia and Julie Lea Goodwin, and such music theatre stars as Amanda Muggleton, Meredith O’Reilly, Simon Ward and Peter Cousens.
John and Jane Rutter have performed together in two concerts that received world-wide viewings via the Australian Digital Concert Hall.
Another career highlight has been the three nation-wide tours (two of which also included New Zealand) with British star Miriam Margolyes. The third of these “The Importance of Being Miriam” is available as an ABC Classics DVD.
John can be briefly seen as the department store pianist in Bruce Beresford’s film “Ladies In Black”!
